Snowmagedon

It started with the news reports early last week....it was coming. Residents should stay tuned.

By Thursday night it was fever pitch. Grocery store lines were long....school districts were already closing for Friday. The impending snow was being deemed possibly a historic snowfall for DC--and not one snowflake had fallen yet.

Then, DCPS did something it hasn't done in a long time...released students and staff at noon. The federal government was closing early. As it was, I only had 7 students in one class, about 40 8th graders showed up for class on Friday.

Mark and I met at Potato Valley for a lunch date and prepared ourselves to hunker down. It started to snow at noon but really didn't stick. By 2:30 the snow was sticking to the grass, but not the pavement. We decided to go for a run while we still could. By the end of our run around 4:30 there was maybe an inch on the ground.

We ran to Matchbox for our "last supper" out....and hunkered down for the evening. When we went to bed on Friday night the snow as already piling high and sticking everywhere.

We woke up in the morning in no rush...

and to approximately 16 inches of snow....

and it was still snowing...blizzard like conditions were forecast for the rest of the day. A quarter mile visibility expected at times throughout the day....

One of our first things in the morning was to let Soba out, however, we had a problem. He wouldn't leave the landing of the back door. He literally stepped out and turned around and ran back inside. For good reason--the snow was taller than he is!

Mark donned his snow pants and geared up to shovel a path for Soba.

After the initial shoveling, he was welcomed inside with a homemade breakfast of coffee, eggs and cheese with veggie sausage and toast.

It was a perfect day to stay inside. A few ventured out, but had to walk in the street.

We stayed in and made muffins (thanks for the mix Mom!).

Plus they made the house smell good and seemed very wintry fun.

Soba had few choices of where to go. His yard has been narrowed down into a single path from the back door to the car and around the car.

At 11:30 a.m. yesterday we were at 21 inches.

Mark took a few minutes to play fetch with Timmy (Soba's favorite toy--a Christmas present from Kofi and Jon). Timmy bounces well in the snow. Soba ran full speed after Timmy--probably from being cooped up for so long.

The only problem was if Timmy bounced into a snow drift.

Soba isn't very fond of snow, but when it means that a dear friend like Timmy is stuck, he's there to dig him out. Mark also lent a hand.

Thankfully there was success!

The snow ended around 5 pm--a few hours earlier than anticipated. The sky cleared just in time to share a beautiful sunset with the snowy background.

Today's agenda: digging out!
